About Xinqiao
The "New Bridge" is located on the oldest bridge in Paris that was closed for major renovations from 1989 to 1991. Most of the scenes in the story are set in the northern section of the bridge: one side is flashing with the sleepless neon of the Samaritaine department store, and the towering silhouette of the Louvre is in the distance; the other side is ringing with the bells of Notre Dame, and the dignified judicial buildings stand silently, but they seem to be blooming with passion under the sparkle of fireworks.
The establishment of the location makes the new bridge full of metaphorical meaning. Our love and desire are shaped and restricted by power, historical constraints and reality, but existence will regenerate new relationships. You want a master and you will have it. How should we exist when we break away from the old constraints of power and finally come to the new bridge?

The mending power of the state apparatus is clearly expressed through the language of the camera. Therefore, the protagonists of the "collage" must be anti-heroes: their method of confrontation is non-organized and non-violent, and they are small and fragile compared with the huge oppression of "state power". Only in insisting on one's own position does one show a kind of lonely uncompromisingness and a true heroic temperament.
Reflections on the May Storm point to the limitations of revolution, imagination, and love. Therefore, an unavoidable dilemma is that after the symbolic elements of ideology are fully realized and completely abandoned, Utopia also becomes a ruin. Carax sets an impossible presupposition for love. This extremely bold presupposition becomes a suspended interrogation of the concept of love based on a certain material basis: when there is nothing materially, and the spiritual symbolic order has been abstracted, is love still possible?
