Experimental documentary: what it is, with Shoot Self with You as the example

What is an experimental documentary?

An experimental documentary joins the formal testing of experimental film with documentary’s responsibility to reality. A 2026 P4 Theater essay argues that what makes a work documentary is not looking natural but making checkable claims about the real world and taking responsibility for its evidence. Shoot Self with You is both experimental film and documentary.

Not a three-way split, but three axes

A 25 June 2026 essay in P4 Theater’s article archive argues that film and theatre first define how a work is produced, kept and presented, a question of medium and institution, while documentary first defines how a work points to historical reality, organises evidence and takes factual responsibility, a question of epistemology and ethics. A documentary can be a film but also theatre, sound or photography; a film can be fiction or documentary.

The essay proposes three axes (medium tense, referential contract, constructed performance) and a threshold of ethical accountability: what makes a work documentary is not that it looks natural or unstaged, but that it makes checkable claims about the real world and takes responsibility for its sources, re-enactments, the situation of its participants and possible consequences.

Why Shoot Self with You is both experimental film and documentary

Shoot Self with You (人类投降派, 2023–2024, approx. 156 min) is an experimental film / documentary; both are attributes of the film. Directed by He Fa, co-created with the entire cast and crew. According to P4 Theater, it went through recruitment, rehearsal, filming and public performance in 2023, and the dialogue, bodies, watching and camera of those live situations were reorganised in the edit. A way in: notice who holds the camera, whether people speak to the lens, and how one action is cut into the next.

The video essay No Genre Survives Three Minutes puts it this way: the film does not simply blend genres; it lets each one live long enough to be trusted, then breaks that trust with evidence already inside the frame.
